British para driver Emily Ham and her 25-year-old Welsh Section D cob Beechwood Bracken, affectionately known as Alfie, have been recognised with a nomination for the Horse & Hound Horse of a Lifetime Award 2026. The nomination celebrates not only Alfie’s achievements in international para driving but also the remarkable partnership he shares with Emily.

Together, Emily and Alfie have represented Great Britain at two FEI Para Driving World Championships, winning two bronze medals. Despite his age, Alfie continues to compete, demonstrating that veteran horses can remain successful in international driving well into their twenties.

Two World Championship bronze medals

Alongside his international achievements, Alfie has also enjoyed success in the Welsh Pony & Cob Society Performance Awards, representing the versatility and sporting ability of the Welsh Section D breed.nHowever, his contribution to Emily’s life extends far beyond competition results.

Following a diagnosis of an incurable neurological disorder, Emily faced significant challenges, including a loss of confidence and independence. Alfie played an important role in helping her regain both.

As Emily’s needs changed, Alfie adapted to them, providing companionship, confidence and motivation. Their partnership enabled Emily to return to competitive driving and achieve success at international level. For Emily, Alfie’s greatest achievement is not the two World Championship bronze medals, but the role he has played in helping her rebuild her life.

Nominated for Horse of a Lifetime

Their story has earned Alfie a place on the shortlist for the Horse & Hound Horse of a Lifetime Award 2026, recognising horses whose achievements and influence extend beyond the competition arena.

Public voting took place from 8 to 16 October 2026. More information about the awards and nominees can be found on the Horse & Hound Awards website.
