FEI: Introduction of Cone Lifters postponed
SportThe FEI has decided to postpone the mandatory introduction of cone lifters in international driving competitions. The decision follows production delays and the need to further test the new equipment before it is introduced at FEI events.
The cone lifters were originally due to become mandatory from 1 July 2026 at CAI2* and CAI3* events, with the exception of FEI Driving World Cup Qualifiers. From 1 January 2027, they were scheduled to be used at almost all remaining FEI driving competitions, excluding the indoor Four-in-Hand World Cup events.
Prevent cone from moving
The new cone lifters were introduced to improve fairness and consistency during cones competitions. Tests showed that, particularly on sand surfaces, cones could shift without the ball falling, allowing competitors to touch an cone without receiving penalties. The cone lifter is designed to prevent the cone from moving while ensuring that the ball falls whenever a cone is struck, creating more consistent results.
However, production of the cone lifters was delayed after it became clear that the material specified in the FEI Driving Rules was not suitable for manufacturing. Although an alternative material has now been identified, it differs from the material described in the rules and has not yet been sufficiently tested under a variety of competition conditions.
As a result, the FEI Board has approved an Emergency Board Resolution postponing the mandatory implementation. The material specification currently included in Annex 7 of the FEI Driving Rules will be removed, while all other technical specifications will remain unchanged. The FEI Driving Department will distribute the approved prototype to selected Organising Committees so that further testing can take place under consistent conditions.
