International Driving Event Lipica Cancelled Due to Influenza Outbreak
SportThe international driving event in Lipica (SLO), which was scheduled to take place from 6 to 10 May, has been cancelled. The organisers announced this decision after the influenza virus was detected in Slovenia. Preparations were in full swing, the time table was published already, and the list of participants was confirmed.
The decision was made following advice from the veterinary faculty and the national equestrian federation in Slovenia, after cases of Equine Influenza Virus type A were identified in the country. According to the federation, infections have been reported in the Ljubljana region, among others, and further spread is anticipated.
The organisers state that the cancellation is necessary to ensure biosecurity and to protect the health and welfare of the horses. Particular emphasis has been placed on safeguarding the horses at the Lipica Stud Farm, where the internationally renowned Lipizzaner horses are bred and where the event was to be held.
Influenza
Equine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease that spreads rapidly through direct contact and via the air. Outbreaks typically lead to transport restrictions and the suspension of competitions in order to prevent further spread.
