ICDA warns drivers: check your bit before your next FEI competition

During the World Championship, several competitors were also required to make changes to their bits before they were allowed to continue competing. This included the removal of zip ties or cable ties.

The checks in Aachen were based on Article 1044.6 of the FEI Veterinary Regulations. This states that additional components or modifications that affect the function of a bit are not permitted unless they have been specifically approved in the FEI Tack App and the FEI Tack, Equipment and Dress Database.

Previously used does not automatically mean permitted

The ICDA therefore stresses that drivers should not automatically assume that equipment they have already used at international competitions earlier this season will also be accepted at their next event.

Drivers are strongly advised to check their bits in advance against the latest information in the FEI Tack App. In case of doubt, the ICDA recommends asking their National Federation to contact the FEI for clarification before travelling to the event. Once at the competition venue, drivers who are still unsure whether their equipment is permitted are advised to contact the event’s Chief Steward.

Request for checks before the start

For the remaining international competitions of 2026, the ICDA has asked the FEI to make it possible for bits to be checked before the start of each phase. This would give competitors clarity in advance and help prevent situations in which equipment is only found to be non-compliant after the competition phase has been completed.

The ICDA also wants to work with the FEI to improve communication about changes to the Tack App. This includes both the timing of changes to rules or assessments and greater clarity about exactly what has been changed.

Drivers are therefore advised to check before every FEI competition whether their bit and any modifications comply with the current regulations and, in case of doubt, to seek clarification in advance
