Possible Name Change for FEI Para Driving
SportThe FEI Board has approved a proposal for a new governance framework for Para Driving. The proposal follows the revised Classification Code introduced by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).
Under the new IPC regulations, sports using the “Para” designation are subject to significantly stricter requirements regarding governance, classification and compliance. According to the FEI, these requirements are disproportionate to the relatively small size and level of activity within the driving discipline for athletes with disabilities.
Adaptive Driving
The FEI Board has therefore approved a new direction for the discipline. One of the proposed changes is to rename Para Driving to Adaptive Driving, although the final name has yet to be confirmed. In addition, the FEI plans to introduce a simplified classification system based on the same principles used within FEI Para Equestrian.
The new framework will be developed in consultation with the FEI Para Driving Subcommittee, the FEI Classification Subcommittee and other relevant stakeholders.
Following the Board’s approval, the FEI will amend the FEI Classification Rules. The FEI Driving Rules, FEI Para Driving Rules and other relevant FEI rulebooks will also be updated through the normal FEI rules revision process.
